AstrologySphere is the website of Phoebe Foresight – the pen name of Lisa Mendes. An astrologer, writer and student of all things esoteric, I studied at the Faculty of Astrological Studies in London, as well as the University of Kent, where I graduated from the Cosmology & Divination MA programme with first class honours. I also spent a year learning horary astrology with the late Vernon Wells, who proved to be an excellent mentor.
Perhaps as a result of my background in journalism, I have a particular interest in interpreting trends and current affairs through the lens of astrology, and use my Astro-Insights Blog to comment on various world events and prominent people from time to time.
As well as a successful astrology practice, I also work as an astrology writer. Over the years, I have contributed monthly horoscope columns and eclipse predictions to a range of online and print publications, from The London Project, to Energies in Action and Harmony Healing’s monthly newsletter. More recently, I revised and updated Harold Wigglesworth’s 1973 classic for the Urania Trust, resulting in the publication of ‘The New Astrology of Towns & Cities.‘ in 2014.
My new book, the Cosmology of Astrology, which is published by Eddison Books, is now also available for pre-order.
My Approach to Astrology
My aim is to help ground my clients in the rhythms of their own personal cosmic cycles, identify key planetary patterns in their lives and ultimately, empower people to ‘follow the directive of the oracle at Deplhi: ‘Know Thyself’. By fostering greater self-awareness, of their innate gifts as well as their blind spots, bad habits, and/or self-destructive or repetitive behaviour patterns etc, I strive to help people develop their talents while mitigating problems so that they can lead their best lives and grow into healthier, happier, and more authentic versions of themselves.
Astrology gives you the tools and insights to identify what themes or cycles are currently active in your life at any given moment, but it is then up to you what you do with that information.
I do not believe in a fixed destiny. Philosophically, I agree with many of the ancient philosophers, who made subtles distinctions between the roles and concepts of Fate, Fortune and Destiny. Although I do believe that as transmigratory souls, we choose certain life lessons or preconditions to experience as before we incarnate: one’s ‘Fate’ – and that these are the patterns we can read in the natal chart, I also believe that every human being has the free will to change their course, to choose a higher path or Destiny, potentials indicated by certain chart points such as the Ascendant, Midheaven, North Node and Part of Spirit.
As such, the choice to exercise free will, can dramatically alter the outcome of any potential ‘forecast’ or reading. In the words of a former teacher, Geoffrey Cornelius: “Destiny is negotiable!”
Furthermore, one is never absolved of personal responsibility or agency. People need to take personal responsibility for their actions, and make conscious choices in terms of how they choose to act/react to any given situation, including how they deal with outside influences/events over which they have no control, which sometimes occur during outer planetary transits. By the same token, you can have a fortunate transit but it won’t necessarily translate into any improvements if you chose to do nothing in terms of using your initiative. One has to ‘seize the day’ or nothing will ever happen!
In this sense, I think that part of what I offer as as astrologer is to help people to make better decisions, and empower them to identify opportunities, minimize risks and transform (or at least mitigate) any potential negatives into positives. Like a therapist, I help people to identify where they keep getting stuck in terms of repetitive patterns, own their role in the behaviour and then empower them to choose different outcomes for themselves. The one difference being that I do not believe that this process is restricted to what is in ‘one’s head’ but reconnecting and cultivating our relationship with the cosmos, which includes nature and what Patrick Curry would call ‘more than human intelligences’.
One of my specialities is to catalyse change in people’s lives. As a ‘Uranian Vessel’, I excel at identifying where people are stuck/not standing in their truth/not accepting their own uniqueness and then help them to get back on track again. I therefore consciously choose to embrace my Sun-Uranus conjunction to get people to ‘wake up’, identify their unique gifts or talents, and find ways for them to make a unique contribution to the world.
