NEW MOON 09 OCT 2018 04H47 BST – 16 DEGREES LIBRA
Relationships – with yourself and others – together with money, values and creativity – are the major focus at the October New Moon. With Venus retrograde and the Sun travelling through ‘we’-oriented Libra, it’s time to go resolve any unfinished business from our past and begin afresh, especially in matters of the heart. Read on for my full New Moon forecast.
October’s New Moon takes place in fair-minded, harmony-loving Libra.
Libra is a cardinal sign, so although better known for having co-dependency issues, and a tendency to be a people-pleaser, it’s also worth remembering that Libra is secretly a warrior for justice. This is the sign of the diplomat, judge and peacemaker, so not necessarily all fluff and hearts, but nonetheless a consummate charmer. Think iron first in velvet glove. After all, in the tarot, Libra is generally associated with the Queen of Swords…
The Moon in Libra is therefore a bit of a contradiction in terms. Although Venus-ruled, which is a feminine planet, Libra is actually an air sign and so masculine/diurnal by mode, and so relies on the head, rather than the heart, to make decisions. As this is antithetical to the way that the Moon likes to operate – she being more attuned to the emotional element of water – this can create more than a bit of internal tension and conflict.
The upshot: If you’re not in a happy place when the New Moon swings around, then be warned: this state of affairs could be amplified – a case of things getting worse before they better. With Venus currently retrograde, facing up to the past will be key, as will getting clear about your values. You may also be prompted to get your ducks in a row as far as finances are concerned – much depends on where Venus falls in your chart (and if you don’t know, then you can always book a reading or order a report from me).
Libra is one of the dual or bicorporeal signs, which ancient astrologers such as Ptolemy saw as synonymous with a tendency to have multiple manifestations. In today’s world, that’s a very welcome thought: options, we like options! And it’s fair to say that if a Libran has a decision to make, it usually takes a third way in order to break the deadlock between two conflicting choices – something you may want to remember if you find yourself facing a major personal dilemma in the next four weeks…
In general, then it’s possible that the New Moon could highlight Libran-ruled themes or qualities, which include:
- Indecisiveness, hesitancy or a tendency to vacillate between options
- A desire for fairness, justice, equality and win-win outcomes
- Balance, symmetry and even-handedness
- Compromise, peace, harmony
- Relationships, partnerships and smooth social relations
The October New Moon takes place in the 16th degree of Libra. The Sabian Symbol for this degree is:
After the storms of winter, a boat landing stands in need of reconstruction.
After the emotional fallout of the July/August eclipses, followed by the ‘get real’ lessons of Mercury-Saturn, last month’s New Moon pushed the ‘reset’ button on things, beginning with the shot in the arm provided by the Jupiter-Pluto grand trines. While many of us are beginning to get clearer about where we want to head next, it’s fair to say that astrologically, we are not completely out of the woods yet.
And having had to seek shelter from these rather intense storms has meant that many of us now realise how important it is to have a safe haven – a refuge we know we can turn to times of trouble. The old adage of the port in a storm.
However, like the boat landing described above, this safe haven may be in need of a little TLC. So at this point in proceedings, before you set out on your next big adventure, it may be a good time to take stock of what work needs to be done in order to shore up your little nest so that it remains as cosy and safe as it ever was in case you need to return to it in the future. The important thing, though, is not to make these repairs turn into an excuse not to move forward when the time comes to hit the road again…
Lynda Hill offers us a few more ideas on how to think about this degree below:
Keywords: Temporary loss. Emotional repair. Tools to repair damage and build a new life. Having faith that the worst is over and recovery can begin. Calling in the experts. Taking time to put the pieces back together. Working to ensure the safety of the community. Insurance claims. The fragility of man’s world in the face of nature. Returning to work.
The Caution: Making excuses instead of fixing things. Feeling emotionally swamped and powerless. Being torn apart. Leaving things a mess. Feeling shot to pieces. Letting things wear down to the point of collapse. Having nowhere to dock. Arguments and violence.
Like last month’s New Moon, Pluto will loom large. However, unlike the harmonious aspects that the Virgo New Moon made to Jupiter and Pluto in September, the Sun and Moon will be making a rather harsh square to the planet of secrets, power and hidden influences this October.
What is this likely to mean? Well, probably a sort of final healing crisis or internal struggle before you finally feel able to break free from whatever has been holding you back and embrace change. Pluto is definitely no picnic, so it likely to make things worse before they get better, a bit like a boil that needs lancing, or a fever that rages before an infection is finally beaten.
I know this probably sounds a bit melodramatic, but the energy surrounding this particular New Moon is very ‘underworld’. What do I mean? Well, in addition to the involvement of Pluto, Lord of the Underworld, this New Moon will take place in the Via Combusta – the fiery road in the sky which the ancients associated with the Sun’s descent every autumn from the Tropic of Cancer to the Tropic of Capricorn, bringing the long dark days of winter to the northern hemisphere. Add to this the fact that the ruler of the Libra New Moon – Venus – is currently retrograde in Scorpio and you have a whole lot of ‘Halloween’ going on!
Plutonian energy is most associated with anything hidden or unconscious that has power over us – abuse, manipulation, deception or anything we feel ashamed about. Scorpio is associated with sex, death and taxes – the areas where most people harbour shady secrets, so it’s possible that situations involving this may arise and need clearing. So it is possible that a secret concerning a hidden association, financial deal or previous relationship may come to light now and create a few waves.
However, I suspect that, rather than external power struggles or inter-personal conflict, this will mean having to go back or inward in order to confront and release ourselves from sabotaging patterns of behaviour, or old emotional ghosts that prevent us from living in our truth and truly embracing change in our lives.
All very shamanic and definitely worthy of a journey to the lower world, if you feel you have the knowledge and experience to do it – and are familiar with your protective spirit guides. Have a look at people like Edwin Steinbrecher for inspiration – his method has helped thousands of people to get in touch with their inner guides and change their lives for the better – from the inside out. Well worth a look if you can find a copy of his book.
Whatever you do, don’t deflect, deviate or procrastinate – Pluto won’t let you off the hook that easily. So rather than create dramas in order to distract yourself from the task at hand – namely the need to make a change – try not to flinch from what needs to be done: instead keep your mind focused and your eyes on the prize. And remember: the darkness of the New Moon is always followed by the light of the waxing Moon. So whatever happens, don’t despair: there is light at the end of this tunnel.
